Understanding Nutrient Neutrality
At BioMark, we believe that an upfront, transparent conversation is always the best approach to understanding your NN requirements.
NN Legislation
What are The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations (2017)?
In 2017, The Habitats Regulations established the legal framework underpinning nutrient neutrality in England. This legislation protects designated habitats, including Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs), from harmful environmental impacts. Under these regulations, developers are required to asses nutrient impacts on protected sites through a Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) to ensure that a plan or project will not significantly harm a protected site.

How to Comply with Nutrient Neutrality
On-Site Mitigation
Developers can meet NN requirements directly within the development boundary by implementing mitigation measures to effectively reduce nutrient runoff. Common approaches include:
-
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
-
Improved Wastewater Management
-
Landscaping with Native Vegetation
Off-Site Credits
When on-site options are not feasible, developers can achieve compliance through approved off-site solutions, including:
-
Funding off-site Mitigation Projects
-
Purchasing Nutrient Credits from Accredited Mitigation Providers such as BioMark
