This week, we had the pleasure of visiting our Fir Tree Farm Habitat Bank in County Durham and were even treated to a rare sunny day! The site currently consists of enclosed farmland, a mix of improved and neutral grassland, a stream, and a small pocket of woodland, all soon to be enhanced through targeted habitat creation.

With work set to begin shortly after the holiday break, here’s a look at what’s coming next:

Our Key Plans:

• Expansion of 5 existing hedgerows into 10m-wide wildlife corridors.

• Creation of 4 new hedgerows

• Establishment of a scrub mosaic with scattered trees

• Enhancement of the species richness in the existing grasslands

These interventions will create a richer, more diverse habitat network across the landscape. The site delivered 37.19 Biodiversity Units, of which there are still 15.75 available BNG Units, marking it as a valuable contributor to ecological restoration in the region.

We’re looking forward to watching this landscape evolve over the coming months. Stay tuned as we document the before-and-after transformation of this Habitat Bank!
